Life is weird

It’s 2020, fuck it, social media was a bad idea—let’s launch a blog.

For years, I’ve been telling my friends and colleagues that they should never give their content to a platform they don’t own; I have consulted business owners and given them the same advice. Why, then, do I not follow my own advice? Because I’m a dumb idiot

Don’t give your best content to platforms you don’t own

– Me, being smart once

My life is weird. I see a lot of strange things. I meet a lot of wildly cool people. I am constantly entertained by the weirdness I encounter, and I truly love sharing the goofiness with people. I tend to put myself in situations that help foster weird encounters.

I like writing about all the hilarity, but I never really know where to do it. On Instagram, I post the meals I eat and the wonderful stories of the places I’ve eaten them. Sometimes, there’s a great story about the owner, or the restaurant, or the dish. Sometimes, I just really have strong feelings about a particular dish. For years, I’ve been posting those experiences solely on Instagram and sharing them out to Facebook occasionally so that my dad can post some ridiculous comment on it. Sometimes, I tweet stuff. Sometimes, I craft a piece of content in my brain and it never goes anywhere.

If you’re reading this inaugural blog post, there’s a good chance that you know me well enough to know that my son Kyle was killed last year. He was 20 years old and he loved to travel. He and I talked about travel and places we wanted to go often, and since he died, I’ve been more conscientious about recording the bits and pieces that make up the tapestry of our lives; the only things I really care about are experiences and memories anyway. It’s been irking me for months that I’ve been doing that on… Instagram and Facebook.

Those are good places to share stuff and build an audience, but a blog gives me the freedom to express myself in whatever way I’m inspired to do so on a moment-to-moment basis. On my most recent trip (to Seattle with Nicole), I finally hit a breaking point and decided I was done giving my work to Instagram. The idea for The Delightfully Weird Blog was born.

It’s pretty likely that most of my content will be food-related, because that’s kind of what I do. But sometimes I like to talk about travel. Sometimes I like to talk about relationship anarchy. Sometimes I like to talk about music. Sometimes I like to talk about my really fascinating journey through fatherhood. Sometimes, I want to share hilarious things that my friends or loved ones have created. This will be a place for all of those things. If you know me, you know I value chaos over consistency, so this will be no different.

If you’ve made it this far, I appreciate and love you! I can’t promise it will always been entertaining but life is too short, too precious, and too ridiculous not to laugh at almost everything that comes our way. If I can help brighten your day just a little bit with my words and photos, then I’ll consider that a victory.
